Nadia Vassell was looking for a way to give back to the community and after donating beauty services to children going back to school with her church, The Lighthouse Christian Church, she decided to donate two days of beauty to women of TLC. In the span of just three hours per day The Nadia Vassell Salon performed salon services on about 12 women of the TLC (Transitional Living Community). Services included Wash, Deep Conditioning treatment, Trims, and Hair Styling.
TLC helps women heal through intensive counseling, linking them to a range of services available in the community, and offering many group activities that help them express themselves—including literary and poetry discussions, yoga, exercise, talent shows and producing their own original works of art.
The goal of TLC is to help residents move out of the shelter and into their own apartments in the community. Last year, and every year since 1997, TLC has helped more than 50 homeless, mentally ill women to apply for and secure their own apartments— a total of more than 700 women. Over 90% of all women placed in apartments by TLC retain their independent housing for six months or more after they graduate from the program.
